Education For Lay Ministry - How am I, how are you, how are we, to respond as followers of Jesus? I believe each of us not only wants to respond, but is called to respond. Education for Lay Ministry provides a template for discussing the changes and challenges in our church and our world. A way is provided for discussing, praying about and responding to these issues – individually and collectively. Education for Lay Ministry is not merely book learning: it is about discovering our God in the world and the Church – and ourselves. It is about you, me, we: becoming Jesus’ Hands, Feet, Eyes and Ears and Voice in God’s World. First Year: in-depth study of the Old Testament using text provided by University of the South. Shared discussion; no papers, exams. An opportunity to explore our Christian heritage. Expect: deepening of faith, increased understanding of our Christian heritage, new confidence as Christ’s follower. Safe, small-group environment, learning, laughter and, of course, food! Please considering joining us as we explore all the possibilities God wants to share with us.
Two classes are offered: Wed. mornings, 9:00-11:30 a.m., beginning Sept. 22 (childcare provided); or Thurs. Evenings, 7-9:00 p.m., beginning Sept. 23. For information, contact the church office, 892-7770.

> Oct 3: Tender Mercies (with Robert Duvall) The talents of Horton Foote (writer) and Bruce Beresford (director) combine to bring this very real tale of redemption and the on-going mystery of faith to life. In a world of chaos and pain who can we really trust?
>
Oct 17: To Kill A Mockingbird (with Gregory Peck) Harper Lee’s marvelous novel is given a equally strong screen presentation. In the midst of fear, prejudice and racial injustice, will Atticus Finch’s defense of the innocent and the truth be enough?
> Nov 7: Moby Dick (with Gregory Peck) John Huston’s version of the great classic novel by Herman Melville. The titanic battle between Ahab and his nemesis, the Great White Whale is beautifully realized by fine period sets and an excellent cast, including Orson Welles. Just how many will one man sacrifice in order to defeat what he perceives as the ultimate evil?
> Nov 21: Quo Vadis, Part I (with Robert Taylor & Deborah Kerr) The 1st part of the 1951 Epic Drama taken from Henryk Sienkiewicz’s magnificent novel. Christians, Romans, Love, Spectacular, St.Peter preaching, St. Paul coming over for dinner, what more could you want?
> Dec 5: Quo Vadis Part 2 (and Peter Ustinov & Leo Genn) Nero (Peter Ustinov) burning Rome and blaming the Christians, Christians vs. lions and wild bulls, and you didn’t think you could ask for more? Here it all is in dazzling Technicolor.
> Dec 19: The Apostle (with Robert Duvall) We end the year’s offering with the theme of vocation, which we will examine throughout the Winter and Spring of 2011. Running from the law Reverend Sonny becomes the Apostle E.F. and starts up a church. Will he be able to save himself – or “only” others.
Missional Renaissance with Reggie McNeal, Sat., Nov. 13, 8:30 a.m. -3:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s, Lakewood, WA. Author Reggie McNeal will lead a workshop based on his book “Missional Renaissance,” Bishop Rickel’s choice for this year’s Lenten reading and blog discussion. McNeal shows three significant shifts in church leaders’ thinking and behavior that will allow their congregations to chart a course toward becoming a truly missional congregation: From an internal to an external focus, ending the church as an exclusive social model; -From running programs and ministries to developing people as its core activity; -From church-based leadership to community-engaged leadership. For more information and to register, go to www.ecww.org or e-mai lspethers@ecww.orgThe cost of $20.00 per person includes lunch and snacks. For directions: http://www.holymotheroflakewood.org/about
