Children’s Ministries Twenty-three percent of the congregation at Church of the Good Shepherd is 18 years old or younger. The congregation has a long-standing commitment of ministering to young people and their families. The children’s programs at Good Shepherd are varied and appeal to a broad range of children and family’s interests and needs. For more information contact Kara Uhrich, Children’s Ministries Leader at karau@goodshepherdvancouver.org

Sunday School The religious curriculum, The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, fosters a child’s spiritual growth through tangible but indirect means. Materials invite children to explore and deepen experiences at their own rhythm. Certified catechists and their assistants prepare the environment and make presentations that “call forth” the child’s response rather than “pour in” information.

The curriculum is rich in resources from the Bible, church history, and liturgy. Sunday school classes are clustered into three groups: preschool-kindergarten, first-third grades, and fourth-sixth grades. Classes meet at 10:15 - 11:00 AM, September - June.

Sixth graders are welcome to attend Atrium III, a class designed for fourth through sixth graders, which uses the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd curriculum, or the Junior Sunday School, open to sixth through eighth graders.

Children's Chapel Children’s chapel services are offered each Sunday at the 9:00 AM and 11:05 AM services. Chapel I is geared for children in preschool through kindergarten. Chapel II is for children in first through sixth grade. Children meet in the Children’s Center building at the beginning of the service and join their parents in the church for Holy Communion. The lessons and activities in the chapel services are designed to help children understandthe scripture passages that are being read in the church that particular Sunday morning.

Nursery Care Qualified caregivers staff the nursery on Sunday mornings from 8:45 AM until 12:30 PM and for many other church related activities. The nursery is for infant children through three years of age. Caregivers are screened through reference checks and the Washington State Patrol and hold current first aid and CPR certification.

All Saints’ Saturday / Palm Saturday These special Saturday events provide children with an opportunity to prepare for two great observances in the Christian year. On All Saints’ Saturday children experience what it is to be a saint of God. For the past several years children and their families have packaged meals to be handed out to families in need in our community, and planted spring flowering bulbs in the church courtyard.

On Palm Saturday, the children prepare for Holy Week with a walk-through of the events of Palm Sunday, Good Friday and the Resurrection. Holy Week and Easter crafts help the children reflect on this special time in the church year. Friends are always welcome to attend.

Christmas Pageant One of the oldest traditions at Good Shepherd is the Christmas Pageant. Children ages four through the sixth grade are invited to present the Christmas story in drama and carol. Older children look forward to speaking parts and the younger children are excited about being angles and shepherds.

Advent Party An event for people of all ages at Good Shepherd is the annual Advent Party sponsored by Children’s Ministries. The evening begins with a potluck dinner and is followed by seasonal craft opportunities, including making an Advent wreath to take home. A short closing service endsthis fun-filled evening.

Acolyte Ministry Children who are in the third grade through twelfth grade who are interested in attending the priests in the sanctuary during Sunday morning services can join the acolyte ministry. Contact Brian Goforth or Tina Henry at office@goodshepherdvancouver.org for more information.

Children's Choir Come sing with us!
Singing during worship is an outward expression of one’s faith and joy. At Church of the Good Shepherd Children’s Choir we learn to express our faith and joy by praising God in song.

Our goal is to deepen each child’s faith by:

• Learning hymns and songs of faith;
• Participating in worship service throughout the year and the annual Christmas pageant;
• Learning scripture and Bible stories through song; and having fun together!
